About Also.
We’re Also, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride also—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.
Also is looking for a Staff Software QA Engineer to be a senior technical leader for the embedded firmware and software team working on our next-generation products. This role is responsible not only for hands-on contributions but also for defining and driving the overall software quality strategy across multiple domains including embedded firmware, hardware integration, and end-to-end system validation. You will work in close partnership with engineering leadership and cross-functional teams to stand up processes, frameworks, and test infrastructure in a fast-paced environment.
What You Will Do
Define and own comprehensive test strategies and quality standards for embedded systems, traction-based safety systems, and broader software platforms.
Lead the architecture and implementation of scalable test automation frameworks for continuous integration and testing pipelines.
Lead the design, setup, and continuous improvement of SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) and HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) environments for robust system-level testing.
Own and manage the full software release lifecycle, from pre-release verification to post-release validation and metrics tracking.
Drive root cause analysis of complex system issues and lead corrective actions across firmware, hardware, and software domains.
Establish and continuously refine QA processes, metrics, and best practices that scale with the organization.
Provide executive-level reporting on software quality status, risks, and mitigation plans.
Collaborate deeply with hardware, firmware, mobile, backend, and product teams to ensure testability and quality are built into product requirements and architecture.
-
Evaluate and engage third-party testing vendors as needed and define criteria for outsourcing versus in-house efforts.
What You Will Bring
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
8+ years of experience in software quality assurance and embedded systems testing, preferably in high-complexity, vertically integrated consumer products.
Proven track record of building QA processes, test infrastructure, and automation frameworks from the ground up.
Technical domain expertise in Connectivity, Mobile & Cloud based platforms for telemetry, app ecosystem and wireless communication.
Experience working with Test management systems such as TestRail or Atlassian X-ray along with test tools for connectivity from vendors such as R&S, Keysight. Automation experience with tools such as Robotframework, Selenium, Appium, Espresso would be a plus.
Deep expertise in embedded systems, real-time software testing, and traction-based or automotive systems.
Strong programming and scripting skills in C/C++ and Python, with experience designing robust automated test pipelines.
Advanced knowledge of CI/CD automation tools and workflows (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar).
In-depth familiarity with UDS, XCP, and other embedded communication protocols.
Expertise in hardware/software communication protocols and physical layers (I2C, SPI, CAN, CAN-FD, USB-PD, etc.).
Strong understanding of real-time operating systems and safety-critical software design.
Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional teams and the ability to influence and drive quality across multiple technical domains.
Passion for mentoring, developing QA teams, and building a quality-first culture in a fast-moving startup environment.
